CONVERSATIONS With Etienne Charles

By Basia Alicia Powell

If you have been following my recent travels, you would have seen highlights from my recent trip to my homeland Trinidad for Carnival 2020. What I did not reveal is the fact that I spent a great part of my carnival working, as interviewed and documented activities of super talented musician, Etienne Charles.

I had the great honor of keeping up with his intense carnival schedule, from his performances with Kes the Band, to his rehearsal with his brass band for his Monday Mas called Etienne Charles and Friends.

Monday Mas with his band was a beautiful experience. While I found the majority of masqueraders to be mature, the vibe was lit, as the music was live. Such a refreshing change. I was reliving my childhood all over again. I was not the only one enjoying “a blast from the past.” Other distinguished guests include, The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Hon Dr Keith Rowley, other Government Ministers, officials, and many others.

I was happy to document his story. I am very inspired by his choice to take the road least traveled. Etienne was born to play music. He is a trained and qualified musician. He is passionate about Caribbean culture and about carrying on the legacy of many great musicians, like the Lord Kitchener, The Mighty Sparrow, other musicians like Leston Paul, Roy Cape, among many others.

As for his style.. Etienne has “swag for days”. Thank you Etienne for allowing us into your home. Can’t wait for Etienne Charles & Friends Monday Mas 2021. We are hooked on the brass my friend.
