Today we celebrate the life and work of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. A man who inspired me from an early age. As a young student pursuing my First Degree in Politics at the University Of The West Indies, I decided to do my final year thesis on his fight for justice and his philosophy on the “Non-violent approach, inspired by the great Mahatma Gandhi.
I was inspired by so much of Dr King’s work. From as far back as 1993, I embraced his idea that we should greet hate with love and adopt a life of service. After doing an in-depth study of Dr King’ work, I too had a dream. A dream to follow my purpose, to never give up, under any circumstances. Perhaps it is for that reason that I am most inspired by this quote,
“If you can‘t fly then run, if you can‘t run then walk, if you can‘t walk then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”
Back then, I had no idea where this dream would take me. I had no idea, that I would end up living in Atlanta,Georgia, and that my “big son” , as he is affectionately referred to, would live that dream and become inspired by and benefit from Dr King’s legacy. Wow‼️
FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, THANK GOD ALMIGHTY WE’RE FREE AT LAST.- DR KING
Today, I feel the power of the moment more than any other time, given the trauma of the events of the past year. I find myself asking, “What would Dr King do or say about this?” Well, based on my research, he would recommend the non-violent approach, he would remind us to choose light over darkness, love over hate and no matter the condition we are faced with, to just keep on moving forward. ✊🏽🖤
